Maybe you’ve been the procrastinator—you know the one who puts off packing the entire house until the weekend of the move. Maybe you’ve packed too far away from the move and you’re digging around to find your hairbrush among the moving boxes. Here’s a packing timeline to help you organize your move no matter what type of mover you may be.
More than a Month Away
Not every move can be planned to a T, but if you do get the opportunity to plan, there are things you can do to make packing your home much easier. This is the perfect time to declutter and take inventory of what you have. Think of the items you want to keep, sell or donate.
A Month Prior
There are many items that are important to us but don’t require daily use. These are the type of items we’d want to pack a month prior to the move. Examples would be keepsakes and memorabilia, home décor, picture frames, posters, candles, trinkets, etc. that add aesthetics to your home.
If you’re temporarily moving to a smaller space and you’re considering storing non-essentials or off-season items, this is when you’ll want to arrange for a storage unit in your new city.
Think of the supplies you will need: boxes, rolls of tape, packs of bubble wrap, etc. Nothing is worse than running out of material while you’re packing, so consider purchasing more than expected.
A Week Prior
Pack a box of items you will need for your first night in the new space—toiletries or medicines you may need. Keep this box separate from the others so they can quickly be found when you need them. This is also the time you pack valuables including jewelry, paper records, and documents. Make sure you keep your valuables safe on moving day!
