How Business Storage Can Help Your Company Grow

A contractor’s garage is full of ladders and tool chests. A retailer has inventory stacked in the back office. An owner-operator needs somewhere to park a rig that won’t fit in the driveway. Each problem is different, but a warehouse lease isn’t always the answer.

BTA Self Storage has large drive-up units at our Rockwall and Forney facilities and 18-wheeler parking in Terrell. Here’s what each location offers and how to choose the right fit.

Inventory Storage for Retailers and Online Sellers

Stock that isn’t on the sales floor still has to live somewhere. A storage unit holds overflow inventory, seasonal merchandise, and display fixtures, so your shop or spare room can go back to its real job.

Seasonal businesses get the most out of this. Holiday stock can sit in the unit through summer, then swap places with patio and pool products in the fall.

Check your products for heat limits before you choose a unit. Candles, cosmetics, electronics, and some packaged goods don’t hold up well through a Texas summer in a standard unit. Both Rockwall and Forney offer large climate-controlled units for that kind of stock.

Equipment Storage for Contractors and Service Businesses

Landscapers, painters, electricians, and cleaning companies all collect equipment faster than they collect garage space. A ladder rack, a pressure washer, spare drop cloths, and a season’s worth of mulch bags can leave no room for the truck.

Drive-up units let you back the work truck to the door and load straight from the bed. No hallways, no carts. Put the tools you use every week near the door and the seasonal equipment along the back wall.

Self storage leases typically prohibit fuel, solvents, compressed gas cylinders, and other hazardous materials. Drain fuel from mowers and other gas equipment before it goes in, following the manufacturer’s storage instructions, and ask the office for the full list of prohibited items before you move in.

Large Drive-Up Units in Rockwall, TX

Our Rockwall facility at 4422 State Hwy 276 has some of the largest drive-up units in our network:

  • 15×15 (225 square feet)
  • 15×25 (375 square feet)
  • 13×30 (390 square feet), electrical available
  • 14×30 (420 square feet), electrical available
  • 15×45 (675 square feet), electrical available

A 15×25 offers room for rows of shelving and boxed inventory, depending on the layout. The 30-foot and 45-foot units offer room for larger equipment, approved trailers that meet the unit’s clearance requirements, or office furniture during a move or remodel. Ask the office about permitted electrical use before renting.

For inventory that needs more consistent temperatures, Rockwall also has a 10x30 climate-controlled unit (300 square feet) with interior access.

Large Units in Forney, TX

Our Forney facility at 16303 FM 548 offers large units in both drive-up and climate-controlled versions:

  • 10×20 (200 square feet), drive-up or climate-controlled
  • 10×30 (300 square feet), drive-up or climate-controlled
  • 15×15 (225 square feet), climate-controlled
  • 15×45 (675 square feet), drive-up

That mix lets a business split its storage. Equipment and supplies that tolerate heat can go in a drive-up unit. Temperature-sensitive inventory goes in a climate-controlled unit at the same address. A vendor who works local markets and trade shows might keep folding tables, canopies, and displays in a 10×20 drive-up, and keep the products themselves in climate control.

18-Wheeler Parking in Terrell, TX

Most HOAs and many city ordinances restrict tractor-trailer parking in residential driveways and on neighborhood streets. Our Terrell vehicle storage lot at 15175 State Hwy 205 has 12×70 gravel spaces sized for 18-wheelers. The lot has wide driveways and generous turning space, making it easier to maneuver large trucks and trailers.

The same lot has 12×35 and 12×40 concrete spaces for box trucks, work trailers, and smaller commercial vehicles that fit within the parking dimensions. Terrell’s main office and traditional storage units are a short way down the road at 15504 State Hwy 205.

Owner-operators get a designated place to park between loads without dealing with neighborhood parking restrictions.

Small fleets can keep trucks that aren’t on a route in one location instead of scattered across employees’ homes.

Businesses with large trailers have somewhere to keep equipment haulers and enclosed trailers between jobs.

Measure your full length before you call, including the trailer and anything mounted to it. Standard access runs 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, seven days a week. Truckers who leave before dawn or roll in late can ask the manager about 24-hour access. Also ask about rules on maintenance work and idling on the lot.

Can You Run a Business Out of a Storage Unit?

A storage unit can hold your inventory and equipment, but it can’t serve as your workplace. Ask the office about deliveries and package acceptance before you plan around them. Instead, most businesses use storage as the room they don’t have. The work happens at the shop, the job site, or the home office, and the unit holds everything else.

Keeping a Business Unit Organized

  • Label boxes on two sides with the product or equipment category, and keep a numbered inventory list on your phone.
  • Use freestanding shelving with heavy items low and light boxes above, so you can pull one box without unstacking a pile.
  • Leave a walkway from the door toward the back wall. In a 30-foot or 45-foot unit, this lets you reach the far end without moving everything in front.
  • Decide who has access. If employees will visit the unit, ask the office how authorized access is managed and decide who is responsible for updating your inventory list.
